Composting Projects

A selection of ORA's projects involving composting are shown; some have reports available to download in pdf format.

Technical Due Diligence on an IVC facility

Following a preliminary, high-level appraisal of a proposed in-vessel composting facility, ORA was asked by a major UK bank, to undertake an in depth due diligence exercise on the proposal according to an agreed specification of service. The work centred on a thorough review of the documentation provided, submission of clarifiation questions to the plant operator and attendance at site visits to the operator's facilities. Greenleaf - Agricultural use of compost and development of on-farm composting techniques

A four year large scale trial which involved key stake holders which have the potential to divert compostable waste away from landfill and into beneficial agricultural use and environmental improvement.

Development of an IVC composting system

ORA advised on trials and carried out validations following commissioning of a new plant.
The report covers: process validation, time/temp profiles, nitrogen dynamics, CO2 and CH4 production, biofilter performance, biodegredation, dry matter and moisture changes, gas formation rates, sanitisation testing, indicator organism testing, heavy metal content and odour elimination.

Recycling Organics in West London (OWL) - Part 1

The project goal was to investigate the potential to collect domestic and commercial organic wastes in West London, process it locally and market the resulting compost in the area in which it originated. The practicalities of collecting kitchen waste alongside dry recyclables were investigated as well as in-vessel composting in relation to new legislative driver and marketing the compost.

Recycling Organics in West London (OWL) - Part 2

The project goal was to investigate the potential to collect domestic and commercial organic wastes in West London, process it locally and market the resulting compost in the area in which it originated. The practicalities of collecting kitchen waste alongside dry recyclables were investigated as well as in-vessel composting in relation to new legislative driver and marketing the compost.

GROWS (Green Recycling of Organic Waste from Supermarkets) - Part 1

ORA worked with Sainsbury's, Waitrose and Sheepdrove Organic Farm to establish a cost effective, sustainable and environmentally sound waste management solution for biodegrable waste from supermarkets.
In Part 1, ORA set up a system for source-segregating supermarket organics, developed a collection round followed by the composting process itself.

GROWS (Green Recycling of Organic Waste from Supermarkets) - Part 2

Part 2 of the GROWS project was to evaluate the effect of the composts produced on soil, and growing conditions in a series of field trials.

GROWS (Green Recycling of Organic Waste from Supermarkets) - Part 3

Part 3 of the project focussed on how biodegradable packaging could assist in the composting of food waste from supermarkets.
